EU investigates TikTok for violating minor safety rules

The European Union is targeting TikTok over concerns for minor safety.

The bloc recently passed new rules on algorithmic transparency and systemic risk. It is now investigating the social media platform for possible breaches, especially concerning how TikTok may harm teens by encouraging addictive behavior. The EU also says TikTok’s measures meant to protect minors from inappropriate content may not be reasonable or effective.

TikTok said its features protect teens and touted a policy of keeping those under 13 off the platform. The company says it will continue working with experts to keep young people safe.

But the company faces penalties of up to 6% of its global annual turnover for proven violations. However, the investigation could take years.
