Dr. Anthony Fauci said at a COVID White House press briefing on Wednesday that children under 4 years old will be recommended to receive three doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine once it becomes approved but declined to say when that might be.

“It looks like it will be a three-dose regimen.  I don’t think we can predict when we will see an EUA [Emergency Use Authorization] with that,” Fauci said, referring to emergency FDA approval.

“The FDA is very scrupulous in their ability and in their effort to make sure that, before something gets approved for any age, and especially with children … that they will be safe, and that they will be effective.”

Currently the CDC recommends everyone 5 and older to receive the vaccine, and everyone 12 and older to receive the booster.

CDC data shows that of the nearly 900,000 COVID-19 deaths in the United States nearly 750 Americans under the age of 17 have died from the virus since January 2020, accounting for .01% of total deaths in the age group in the last 2 years.

Fauci’s announcement comes as Pfizer has begun trials on a new version of its vaccine specifically designed for the Omicron variant. At the same time Pfizer is also testing a fourth dose of the current vaccine against a fourth dose of the Omicron version.
