The US has successfully disrupted a massive Chinese cyber operation.
Speaking at the Aspen Cyber Summit yesterday, FBI Director Chris Wray announced the agency has thwarted a Chinese hacking campaign, known as Flax Typhoon, that had been targeting American infrastructure.
The announcement comes nine months after Wray revealed to Congress that the FBI had stopped a separate Chinese hacking operation called Volt Typhoon, which targeted American internet routers. According to Wray, Flax Typhoon used similar tactics as Volt Typhoon but was far more ambitious.
Wray didn’t name specific victims of the operation but said, “Flax Typhoon’s actions caused real harm” before being stopped by the FBI.
Wray said the FBI has since removed malware from thousands of infected devices.
