Federal judge bars Florida from blocking transgender procedures for minors

A federal judge in Florida on Tuesday ruled against banning gender transition surgeries for minors.

The judge said that a 2023 state law was unconstitutional. The legislation sought to ban gender transition surgeries for minors while also restricting these procedures for adults. Senior Judge Robert Hinkle said that Florida crossed the line when it restricted minors from puberty blockers even if they received parental consent.

The judge also quoted Martin Luther King Jr. when he said that those who are against providing these treatments are comparable to those who were once racist and misogynistic.

The judge blamed religion for the conservative trans policy. But he added, “Transgender opponents are of course free to hold their beliefs…But they are not free to discriminate against transgender individuals just for being transgender.”
