Fighting intensifies in Gaza, Netanyahu vows to press on

The war in Gaza intensified to some of its fiercest fighting in weeks yesterday. In the south, Israeli forces pushed across a highway into Rafah, while troops in northern Gaza recaptured an area from Hamas terrorists.

The uptick in fighting comes on the heels of Israel’s Memorial Day, during which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to press ahead in eliminating Hamas.

But the US is doubtful Israel can pull it off. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campell said this week the U.S. does not believe Israel can achieve its goal of “total victory” over Hamas and pressed for a “political solution” to the conflict. Earlier this year, Israel said it had destroyed roughly two-thirds of Hamas’ regiments.
