Fighting resumes in Gaza as ceasefire expires

Israel is resuming its ground offensive in Gaza.

Israel and Hamas failed to extend what had become a seven-day ceasefire yesterday. The week-long truce saw the release of 110 hostages held by Hamas in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners. Over 100 hostages remain trapped in Gaza.

Israel accuses Hamas of violating the ceasefire by targeting Israeli cities. The resumed fighting also comes a day after Hamas gunmen killed three people at a bus stop in Jerusalem.

Israel had promised to continue fighting “with full military power” after the ceasefire ended.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says Israel will fight in the “entire” Gaza Strip until Hamas is destroyed and all the hostages are returned home.
