Finland is closing its final crossing on the Russian border as the Finns accuse Moscow of pushing immigrants across the border.
The Finnish government calls it an “influence operation” and “hybrid attack.” For context, the country normally sees less than one immigrant per day on this border. This month, they’ve had around 900 asylum seekers enter from Russia.
That’s in spite of the country closing seven of the eight crossing points earlier this month. Finland accuses Russia of forcing people to cross and closing the gate behind them. Authorities say immigrants come from countries like Pakistan, Syria, and Morocco.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated his country is determined to end the crossings. The last road, located in the Arctic Circle, will close tomorrow. One crossing remains open to freight.
Estonia and Norway are considering following suit if they see a similar surge in numbers.
