This past weekend saw a flurry of exciting action in football, both at the collegiate and professional levels.

On Saturday, Illinois and #7 ranked Penn State clashed in a marathon game. Regulation ended in a tie, and the two teams battled through a whopping nine overtimes before Illinois converted the game-winning 2-point conversion to upset Penn State and spoil the school’s homecoming game:

The game broke the record for the most periods played in college football history, with 60 minutes of regulation action, two normal overtime periods, and 7 overtime periods that showcased the new NCAA rule where teams exchange 2-point attempts.

Penn State remains in the top 25 after the brutal loss, but any hopes of a college football playoff berth were likely dashed. The Nittany Lions sit at #20 in the nation with a 5-2 record, while the Fighting Illini improve to 3-5 on the season.

Meanwhile in the NFL, week seven action was highlighted by Tom Brady’s continued dominance and defiance of time in his mid-40s. NFL fans are witnessing something special, where a player plays at possibly the highest level of his career at 44 years old. It is happening with Tom Brady, who led the Buccaneers to a dominant 38-3 win over the Chicago Bears in Tampa on Sunday.

Brady completed 20 of 36 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns, one of which was the 600th of his career. He becomes the first and only quarterback in NFL history to throw 600 career touchdowns.

Three of Brady’s TDs were snagged by veteran wideout Mike Evans, including the 600th. Evans has become one of the most dominant receivers in the league thanks largely to his stellar quarterback.

The Buccaneers look to repeat as Super Bowl champions, as they hold a tie for the second-best record in the conference with the Packers and Rams at 6-1 and a comfortable lead in the NFC South.

Meanwhile in the AFC, the upstart Cincinnati Bengals won a crucial mid-season divisional matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, romping Baltimore on their home turf 41-17 and taking over first place in the AFC North.
