France becomes first country to constitutionally enshrine abortion

France became the first country in history to enshrine abortion into its constitution.

French lawmakers voted 780-72 yesterday to pass an amendment officially making abortion a “guaranteed freedom” – permanently cementing the country’s 14-week limit into law. In 2022, French Abortion activists began pushing for a constitutional amendment in the wake of the overturning of Roe v Wade in the United States.

French President Emanuel Macron called the move a matter of “French pride.” But not everyone is celebrating the move. The Bishops’ Conference of France denounced the amendment and is calling for a day of “fasting and prayer.”

The Vatican also released a statement saying, “in the era of universal human rights, there can be no ‘right’ to take a human life.”
