France’s Macron calls for stronger EU defense, less reliance on US

French President Emmanuel Macron is calling for stronger local defense in the European Union.

During his speech at the Sorbonne University in Paris yesterday, Macron warned that Europe “could die” for its lack of military preparedness.

The president also called for less reliance on the US. This is not the first time Macron has expressed ideas like these. He made similar remarks in 2018 when he argued against the continent’s reliance on American defense.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed Macron’s speech saying, “France and Germany want Europe to be strong, your speech contains good ideas on how we can achieve this.”

This all comes as former President Donald Trump had accused the EU multiple times of freeloading on American defense.
