Germany and India became the most recent nations to announce that they will be sending naval ships to the South China Sea, seemingly in response to China’s claim of sovereignty over much of the 1.3 million square mile waterway. Germany said that they want to “show more of a presence in the Indo-Pacific region.” Meanwhile, India said they would be sending four warships for a two month deployment to take part in exercises with several countries including the US, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia.

In addition, Vice President Kamala Harris will be visiting Asia later this month. During this diplomatic trip the White House has indicated that China’s activities in the South China Sea will be a major discussion point. Harris is set to visit Singapore on August 22 – 23, 2021 and then Vietnam from August 24 – 26, 2021, becoming the first Vice President to ever visit Vietnam. Whether or not Harris’s visit to the region will be effective at cooling tensions between Western countries and China is yet to be seen.

China has thus far not issued any response to Germany or India’s actions. However, China has continue to fortify its positions and holdings in the South China Sea. China also seems to remain committed to its long term plan to retake Taiwan despite firm warnings from the US not to do so.
