Thirty-three Republican lawmakers signed a letter sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Committee on House Administration Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) on Tuesday demanding an investigation into explosive reports that Capitol Police are “monitoring” American citizens and lawmakers.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) led the letter, citing “troubling” reports that Capitol Police have been investigating the backgrounds of people who meet with lawmakers.
“If these reports are true, that the Capitol Police force is actively looking for and reviewing private information, then this is a gross violation of American civil liberties and an abuse of power,” Biggs said. “I’m calling on Speaker Pelosi and Chairwoman Lofgren to do what is best for the American people and look into this troubling report.”
The letter references a shocking POLITICO report detailing how Capitol Police are actively “monitoring Members of Congress, their staff, constituents, and supporters,” creating “serious constitutional concerns.”
The Republicans also point to revelations in the report that Capitol Police are also surveilling “online activity of congressional staff and individuals who meet with Members of Congress” as well as property tax and donor information.
“Our constituents have the right to petition Congress and they should be able to exercise this right without fear that Capitol Police will scrutinize their property taxes, social media, or relationships,” the letter continues, adding that the report “leaves many serious questions unanswered,” including whether Capitol Polices routinely investigate Americans who meet with lawmakers without their knowledge or approval.
Representative Troy Nehls believes that it may be Pelosi who is behind the tabs being kept on lawmakers. Nehls, who claimed that Capitol Police illegally took pictures of sensitive information in his office in November, told Tucker Carlson that he believes Nancy Pelosi is “weaponizing” the Capitol Police to silence and destroy her opponents.
