GOP Sen. Barrasso opts out of leader race

In the Senate, the battle of the “three Johns” is now down to two.

Yesterday, Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso announced he’s not looking to replace Mitch McConnell as GOP leader, saying he plans to run for party Whip instead. That leaves John Cornyn of Texas and current whip John Thune of South Dakota to duke it out for the top spot.

But there could be other challengers waiting in the wings. Florida Sen. Rick Scott is reportedly in talks with Donald Trump about running for the position. This would be Scott’s second shot at leadership, after mounting an unsuccessful campaign to replace McConnell in 2022.
