Approximately two dozen US officials staffed in Vienna, Austria have experienced systems of a mysterious disease referred to as Havana Syndrome since the beginning of the year. The Austrian government has announced that they will be assisting the US as they investigate the disease and its source. The US Senate has already expressed that they have been working closely with US intelligence agencies in investigating the disease and have reportedly held top secret hearings in order to review findings and direct the investigation.

Austria’s Foreign Ministry released a short statement saying,

We take these reports very seriously and in line with our role as host state we are working with the U.S. authorities on jointly getting to the bottom of this. The safety of diplomats posted to Vienna and their families is of the utmost importance to us.

The disease first emerged in 2016 in Havana, Cuba where US diplomats and staff were targeted and experienced symptoms. Since then it is widely suspected that the disease is a result of some kind of microwave or radio wave weapon technology. After Havana, Vienna has experienced the second most recorded attacks. Who is behind the attacks and developed the futuristic weapon is still not publicly known.

Recently, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a government wide investigation into all reports of Havana Syndrome. It is hoped that a breakthrough will be achieved in the coming weeks. Given the origination of the disease in Cuba as well as the frequent instances of attacks in Austria, a former Soviet Union nation, there is widespread speculation that Russia may ultimately be the culprit behind the mystery. In many ways the entire situation has the hallmarks of a Cold War story in modern times.
