Honduras breaks ties with Taiwan, affirms ‘One China’ policy

by ian

Honduras broke ties with Taiwan yesterday after pledging allegiance to the “one China” policy, which says China owns the island.

Honduras called Taiwan an “inalienable part of Chinese territory.” It pledged not to have any more official relationship with Taiwan after nearly 80 years of diplomacy.

Taiwan’s President is accusing China of buying diplomatic loyalty from Honduras. But China denies this.

With Honduras gone, Taiwan now has only twelve official allies left, most of which are poor and developing countries. The nation welcomed a Czech delegation today as it seeks more Western help.
