House conservatives demand delay on government funding

Republican infighting could cause a government shutdown this Friday.

Congress failed to release compromise appropriations bills on Sunday, as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) faces increasing pressure from House conservatives. Since becoming speaker, Johnson has cut two spending deals with Democrats, something that cost Kevin McCarthy the speakership last year.

Now, conservatives say they won’t support a third deal without major concessions. Freedom Caucus Chair Bob Good (R-Va.) says a government shutdown is better than funding bad policy.

Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R) agrees. He told NBC News on Sunday he won’t vote for any deal that doesn’t fix the border.

But it’s not just the border. Conservatives are also looking for wins on transgender and abortion issues, along with putting a stop to President Joe Biden’s climate agenda. It remains to be seen if they’ll get what they want, and Biden is meeting with congressional leaders today to discuss a funding plan.
