House Republicans look to hold Sec. Blinken in contempt over Afghanistan withdrawal

by ian

Republicans are seeking to hold Secretary of State Antony Blinken in contempt of Congress for failing to respond to a subpoena order regarding the Afghanistan withdrawal.

Michael McCaul (Texas), who is the Republican Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that Blinken did not respond to a subpoena issued last week asking him to testify about the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal. The measure, even if passed in the House, is unlikely to succeed since the DOJ would have to agree to the prosecution.

However, The Hill notes that Blinken could face a different outcome under a potential Trump administration.

The State Department told The Hill that Blinken has already testified before Congress 14 times, which included appearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee four times.
