House works on bipartisan stopgap bill as Schumer brings matter to Senators

by ian

House Republicans are racing against the clock to pass a federal spending bill ahead of an Oct. 1 deadline after the chamber rejected an earlier proposal.

GOP lawmakers are crafting a new three-month stopgap bill – this time without a previously included measure that would have required proof of citizenship for voter registration. The bill’s text should be available by Sunday.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is taking matters into his own hands. Yesterday, he announced plans to advance a bipartisan government funding bill, even though funding bills are supposed to start in the House.

Schumer said by filing today, he’s giving the Senate “maximum flexibility for preventing a shutdown.”
