Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, submitted a rare plea offer in a Los Angeles federal court, hoping to save his criminal case from going to trial.
Special counsel David Weiss indicted the first son last year on tax evasion charges. Biden was also convicted of three felonies for purchasing a firearm while abusing drugs in addition to six other misdemeanors. The gun felony could mean up to 25 years in prison and a maximum fine of $750,000.
Since things aren’t looking too good for the president’s son, he has decided to plead guilty to all nine charges using the Alford plea. This means that while the defendant could maintain his innocence, he would acknowledge the case against him and accept the penalties of his sentencing.
However, it’s quite rare that the DOJ would accept this kind of plea as it is mainly reserved for “the most unusual of circumstances” and only through the approval of an attorney general.
CBS News reports that Biden is scheduled to be sentenced in November.
