Illinois becomes 3rd state to remove Trump from ’24 ballot

Illinois is now the third state to remove Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot over the former president’s alleged role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Cook County Judge Tracie Porter ruled yesterday that Trump violated the 14th Amendment’s “insurrection clause,” making him ineligible to run for office. The ruling comes a month after the Illinois Board of Elections dismissed a 14th Amendment challenge to Trump’s eligibility, but Porter’s ruling reverses that decision.

A spokesperson for the Trump campaign said they will appeal. Ultimately, the Supreme Court will decide whether Trump can be removed from the ballot.

Earlier this month, the high court seemed skeptical of Colorado’s efforts to disqualify the former president on similar grounds. A ruling is expected by the end of June.
