Iran seizes oil tanker in retaliation for similar seizure from year prior

Iran seized an oil tanker yesterday in what could be a new regional flashpoint.

The Saint Nikolas was carrying Iraqi crude oil to Turkey when the Iranian Navy forcefully took control of the vessel. It’s since been diverted into Iranian waters. But this isn’t a random act of piracy. The U.S. confiscated the same ship from Iran last year as part of a sanctions operation. Iranian media says this was retaliation.

The White House condemned the seizure. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby says the U.S. is working with allies to come up with a response.

This is the second time this month that Iran attacked a merchant vessel.
