Israeli military orders internal Oct. 7 probe

Israeli defense officials are investigating security failures that allowed Hamas to attack on October 7.

The chief of staff ordered the internal probe on Monday after deciding that it shouldn’t wait until the fighting ends. However, the investigation will be strictly focused on military operations and will avoid examining the policies handed down by political leaders. The goal is to identify defense deficiencies.

Around 3,000 Hamas militants broke through the border into southern Israel on October 7 after using an undetected tunnel to maintain an element of surprise. Over 1,200 people died that day in Israel. Multiple IDF officials are all in the hot seat of the review.

The military expects to publish its findings in May. External reviews are currently on hold until the fighting ends in Gaza.
