Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced yesterday he’s stepping down ahead of the country’s upcoming elections in the wake of a fundraising scandal.
Authorities are currently investigating whether lawmakers received proceeds from fundraising events kept out of official records. Kishida, who is the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, has seen approval ratings as low as 25% in the wake of the scandal.
The party is set to elect a new leader in September – leaving Kishida’s successor just under one year before the country’s general elections
