Kevin McCarthy ousted as Speaker

For the first time in American history, the House of Representatives voted to remove a sitting Speaker.

The House voted 216-210 Tuesday night to remove Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the role with 8 Republicans joining the entire Democrat caucus in the vote. Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz led the effort after McCarthy passed a bipartisan stopgap bill last week.

Though Gaetz succeeded in booting McCarthy, most Republicans were not in favor of the move. Some staunch conservatives, like House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan of Ohio, were counted among those against the move.

For his part, McCarthy says he doesn’t regret how he handled last week’s spending battle, but says he will not run for speaker again.
