Louisiana criminalizes abortion drugs

Louisiana is criminalizing abortion pills.

Republicans in the state passed a first-of-its-kind bill that could criminalize the possession of two drugs commonly used in abortions without a prescription. The state senate passed the legislation 29-7 yesterday, following a similarly lopsided passage in the state house.

Now, it’s up to Republican Gov. Jeff Landry to sign the bill. Landry, an anti-abortion advocate, is expected to sign the legislation. He posted on X earlier this week, “This bill protects expectant mothers while also allowing these drugs to be prescribed to those with a valid prescription.”

However, The Hill reports that women will still be able to get the pills from blue states through telehealth shield laws.
