Miami Beach authorities placed an emergency curfew last night after a heavy police presence could not control an unruly Spring Break crowd.
Two separate weekend shootings killed two people – one on Friday evening and one early Sunday morning. Police say both incidents were between beach visitors, and both shooters were arrested within minutes.
Mayor Dan Gelber placed an emergency three-day curfew that will see the South Beach area shut down after midnight. Businesses in the area are also banned from selling alcohol for off-premise consumption after six o’ clock.
Gelber said that the “excessively large and unruly crowds” were impossible to control. The mayor stated that the presence of bad actors and firearms together “created a peril” for others.
The city commission will meet today where they will most likely extend the curfew through next Monday.
