In Minneapolis, Minnesota a mass shooting has left two people dead and eight injured with one of the injured in critical condition. This shooting comes with a wave of new mass shootings as the US slowly makes its way out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the pandemic mass shootings in the US had been on the decline, but as pandemic restrictions have loosened around the country mass shootings have seen a tragic increase.

The Minneapolis police tweeted updates on Saturday,

The suspected catalyst for this shooting was a verbal disagreement according to Minneapolis police, but the identities of the shooters and victims have not yet been released to the public. Whenever shootings involve four or more people The Congressional Research Service identifies them as mass shootings.

The Minneapolis Police released a full statement on the shooting on their Facebook account which can be found here. Minneapolis Chief of Police, Medaria Arradondo, gave the following public statement,

These brazen senseless acts of gun violence must stop. The perpetrators of these crimes should never find refuge or anonymity in our communities. Minneapolis police officers will continue to rush into harms way to save lives however we need help from community leaders and residents to stand up and speak out denouncing loudly that they will not tolerate this violence as well. Our greatest strength is when we all work together to keep our city safe. Our children are watching us and how we respond during these times. Let’s come together to uplift hope and peace.

This shooting is of particular note in light of the tumultuous year Minneapolis has gone through in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, the trial of former police officer, Derek Chauvin, and widespread civil unrest. Far left groups like Black Lives Matter have been at the forefront of the unrest, seizing the opportunity to push for the abolition of the police.

Tragic events, like the ones that unfolded over the weekend, are an unfortunate reminder of the need for police to pursue criminals and protect the public. In light of these tragic events people around the country are praying for the citizens of Minneapolis and an end to the chaos.
