Missouri House Republicans backed off from a controversial abortion bill this week.
The law would have expanded on the state’s total abortion ban by allowing prosecutors to bring murder charges against women who get abortions. Democrats condemned the proposal as extreme, and it also received pushback from some pro-life groups.
Missouri Right to Life testified against a similar bill earlier this year.
State House Majority Leader Jonathan Patterson called the bill’s withdrawal “the appropriate thing to do” saying it does not “not represent the mainstream thinking of Missourians or Republicans in the general assembly.” The law has yet to be withdrawn from the Senate.
