NASCAR is distancing itself from a popular anti-Biden catchphrase that originated at a one of their races.

According to the AP, NASCAR president, Steve Phelps, said that the racing organization will now pursue legal action against anyone who is using NASCAR branding that includes the phrase, saying it is illegally using their trademark. He further said that NASCAR doesn’t want to be associated directly with either side of the aisle and that he is “not happy” that the organization was the starting point for the phrase which he said disrespects the office of the president.

Phelps pushback against the phrase on licensed gear came shortly after former Philadelphia Phillies player, Lenny Dykstra tweeted a picture of himself wearing a shirt with the infamous phrase alongside NASCAR branding.

“Let’s Go Brandon” has become a chant that has been heard across various sports arenas over the past several weeks, as it has become a slogan used to voice displeasure with President Biden’s job performance.

The refrain began at a NASCAR race at Talladega Speedway on Oct. 2, when an NBC reporter interviewing the winning driver, Brandon Brown, misconstrued a profane “*Expletive* Joe Biden” chant as a cheer for Brown. Either out of not hearing correctly or trying to avoid an awkward exchange, she told the viewing audience that the rowdy crowd was instead shouting “Let’s go Brandon.”

Many on the right have embraced the phrase as a way to criticize the president without using profane language or risking censorship from big tech. The Washington Times reported on the phrase, saying,

‘Let’s go, Brandon’ has exploded on the right, arming cheeky conservatives with a deceptively innocuous cri de coeur that takes sarcastic swings at President Biden and the mainstream media without running afoul of technology censors.
