Navalny’s mother says authorities ‘blackmailing’ her over son’s funeral

The mother of deceased Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny says the state is blackmailing her with her son’s body.

Navalny’s mother announced yesterday that she saw her son’s remains in the Artic city of Salekhard. But she says authorities are demanding that she agree to a secret burial service before they release his body. Those demands go so far as to decide where his final resting place will be.

But the grieving mother is fighting back and has filed a lawsuit against the city officials. She says she wants the public to be able to say goodbye to her son.

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) expressed his condolences to Navalny’s mother. But he also said that Nalvany’s widow Yulia had a stark warning for the U.S. following her husband’s death.
