It seems as though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will have more with which to contend than an ongoing battle against Hamas terrorists.
Netanyahu’s corruption trial, initially suspended following the Oct. 7 attack, was reportedly back on as of Monday. The recommencement of this trial during Israel’s war against Hamas drew some blowback from his Likud Party.
Minister David Amsalem took to X on Sunday to mock the decision to pick up what Netanyahu supporters believe is a politically motivated trial even as Israeli military personnel search for captives and are actively fighting.
Those who support Netanyahu have argued that the charges – which include bribery, fraud, and breach of trust – are baseless, and the prime minister denies any wrongdoing.
But the resumption of this trial may play into Netanyahu’s dwindling support among Israeli voters. Recent polls show public opinion is already shifting away from Netanyahu and Likud in favor of the National Unity Party, which is headed by Benny Gantz.
