Norfolk Southern comes to $600 million settlement in derailment case

Norfolk Southern has agreed to pay $600 million in the East Palestine trail derailment lawsuit.

The company said in an agreement yesterday that if the court approves, residents within a 10-mile radius of the train derailment will be eligible for personal injury claims. Compensation will be optional for those within a 20-mile radius.

The toxic spill from some of the freight trains resulted in the evacuation of nearly half the population of East Palestine, meaning about 2,000 people.

Norfolk Southern added that the settlement does not mean the company’s “admission of liability, wrongdoing, or fault.”
