In a new twist in the OpenAI drama, the ousted CEO is back in while the company board is out. OpenAI stated last night that they “reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return.” There will also be a fresh board, which only has three members right now.
The board fired the AI genius on Friday. On Sunday night, Microsoft scooped Altman up to lead an advanced research department. But more than 80% of the company’s 770 employees threatened to follow their leader to that team by the end of yesterday.
Altman said on X that he is looking forward to returning to OpenAI with the support of both the new board and the Microsoft CEO. Former board chairman Greg Brockman, who walked away during the fiasco, is also set to return in some role.
