Palestinian Authority PM resigns amid calls for reform

The Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, or PA, announced his government’s resignation yesterday.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said new arrangements were needed to address “the new reality in the Gaza Strip.” US-supported Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted the Prime Minister’s resignation.

But many are wondering if the move will make an impact, as a sizeable portion of Palestinians don’t recognize the authority of the PA. This is because of Abbas, as he opposes Hamas and recognizes the nation of Israel.

There are still major obstacles to establishing Gaza as an independent state, which the US is urging as a resolution to the war.
