Pew Research poll shows concern over waning Christianity

A new poll shows Americans believe Christianity has a positive influence on public life but also that the religion’s influence is waning.

Pew Research found that 80% of US adults believe Christianity’s role in American life is shrinking. That’s the highest the number has ever been. At the same time, nearly half of respondents said that was a bad thing.

Roughly the same amount say there’s a conflict between their religious beliefs and mainstream American culture. That number rose 6 percentage points over the past 4 years.

Overall, it looks like the country may be split right down the middle. When asked whether the Bible should influence US laws, 49% said it should have a “great deal” of influence while 51% said it should have “not much” or “no influence.”
