Police blame Philadelphia’s crime epidemic on progressive policies

Philadelphia has seen an uptick in crime over the last months. Many are blaming liberal policing policies for carjackings and other crimes impacting local residents.

Local news indicated that four suspects carjacked a priest as he was unloading a wheelchair from his car in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia just days ago. The Daily Wire reported that the priest, a member of the Society of Jesus, was with a passenger on Sunday evening when attackers threw the passenger out of the car and took the vehicle.

The carjacking was but one instance of the City of Brotherly Love’s epidemic-level carjackings. With three months left in the year, Philadelphia has seen more than 1,000 carjackings, breaking the previous high set in 2021.

“Philadelphia has its highest-ever number of carjackings at over 1,000,” Fox 29 anchor Steve Keely reported on Twitter. “1,005 total carjackings at end of day September 27th. Already far surpassing previous @phillypolice stat record year, 847 in 2021, that doubled the 410 in 2020, & now more 4 times the 225 in 2019.”

Two Philadelphia WaWa convenience stores will be shut down due to increased crime, according to NBC Philadelphia. The outlet reported that the Delaware County-based chain continues “to be focused on doing everything we can to monitor and work with local authorities to address challenges impacting operations in any other stores.”

The Center City convenience stores that will close are at 12th and Market and 19th and Market streets and the company said in their statement, “Despite reducing hours and investing in additional operational measures, continued safety and security challenges and business factors have made it increasingly difficult to remain open in these two locations.”

A recent Fox News interview with Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police president John McNesby highlighted his criticism of Philadelphia’s Democrat mayor and progressive district attorney as the cause of the increasing crime in the city.

According to McNesby, the City of Brotherly Love’s leadership is failing to defend its police officers and back policies that would keep law-abiding citizens safe. Of particular interest to McNesby was District Attorney Larry Krasner’s choice to go soft on prosecutions for many crimes.

The police union president asserted that the DA wouldn’t support officers after three city SWAT officers were shot serving a homicide warrant: “It’s our liberal, progressive, so-called D.A.,” McNesby said. “He does more work to let people out of jail than he does to keep them in.”

“[Criminals] know that they can wreak havoc and do whatever they want and there’s not a damn thing that’s going to happen to them. They’re not allowed to enforce the law,” McNesby said before adding that upwards of 800 more officers are needed for the police to effectively combat crime.

The union president said that police are suffering not only lowered morale but the understanding that the criminals are unlikely to face consequences.

“It’s the same tune every day,” McNesby said. “We’re bringing guns off the street, and the people know that are being caught with these guns that there’s not going to be any consequences.”
