Polish President calls for NATO defense spending to hit 3% of GDP

Polish President Andrzej Duda is urging NATO members to raise their defense spending to 3% of their gross domestic product.

In an address to his nation yesterday, the Polish president says it’s time to act “boldly and uncompromisingly.” In his words, Moscow has imperialistic ambitions and is heading toward a confrontation with the NATO alliance.

Poland now spends 4% of its GDP on defense, which outpaces even the United States. But the US State Department signaled hesitancy at the proposal, saying the current goal should be getting NATO allies up to the 2014 benchmark of 2%. President Joe Biden hosted Duda at the White House today.
