Politicians, pro-lifers fight to know what happened to ‘DC Five’

Some lawmakers on Capitol Hill are refocusing efforts on addressing concerning abortion practices in the nation’s capital.

A group of Republican lawmakers and pro-life activists gathered in front of the Capitol building on Wednesday demanding justice for the so-called “D.C. Five.” This is in reference to five premature aborted babies. They were discovered to have been aborted at the Washington Surgi-Clinic in 2022.

The discovery was made by a group known as the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising. The group’s founder, Terrisa Bukovinac, spoke before reporters on Wednesday detailing that gruesome find.

Since that time, the PAAU and Bukovinac have demanded an investigation into the clinic and its overseer, Cesare Santangelo. They have also requested an autopsy on the five aborted babies. They believed the babies were aborted in violation of the federal Partial Birth Abortion Act and the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.

There was a recent threat to destroy the bodies of these babies, which caused an immediate outcry to keep them intact. The activists have since received help from other sources on that endeavor.

The American Center for Law and Justice – or ACLJ – came alongside the PAAU in requesting the bodies remain intact.

Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, a member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government, and  Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), a member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance, sent a letter making the same request.

All that pressure resulted in one important win – the D.C. Medical Examiner agreed on Friday to preserve the remains of these babies. But the calls for investigation into the matter continue as the government ignores the situation.

Roy told The Daily Signal that he and Biggs are aiming to “shame” the government into doing the right thing, despite his admission that they “shouldn’t have to do that.”

In addition to getting a proper investigation, pro-lifers are also calling to allow the babies a proper burial. Rev. Patrick Mahoney told The Daily Signal he has been fighting for this alone over the past two years.

Republicans are also going after the FACE Act, which has previously been used to detain people who were peacefully protesting outside of abortion clinics.
