A year out from the tumultuous fallout of the 2020 presidential election, which culminated in a riot on Capitol Hill that is still being used as partisan cudgel today, Americans are unsurprisingly feeling pessimistic about the state of the country.

According to a new Axios poll 53% of American adults say that the U.S. is more divided today than ever before – a sentiment that has remained unchanged since January 2021 when Joe Biden was about to take office.

The controversy surrounding the last presidential elections appears to play a role in these divisions. According to the poll, only a narrow majority of Americans (55%) say that Joe Bide legitimately won the election, which is down from 58% last year, while 26% say Biden is not the legitimate winner. 16% of Americans say they are unsure about the legitimacy of the election.

Axios notes that these numbers regarding the election, likewise, remain unchanged from January of 2021. When the question was first asked 96% of Democrats said Biden legitimately won, as opposed to 57% of independents, and only 48% of Republicans.
