A survey recently conducted from the Cultural Research Center of Arizona Christian University revealed poignant moral, political and theological characteristics of the influential millennial generation, the current generation of adults between the ages of 25 and 40.

George Barna, a professor at the university, conducted a survey titled “Millennials in America” in which he explores the opinions and beliefs of the generation that is quickly becoming the most influential in the world. In its introduction, the survey states:

“Millennials represent roughly one-quarter of the nation’s total population, and about one-third of the adult population… Their influence in the marketplace, despite their relative youth, is undeniable.

The results of the survey reveal the ways in which the millennial generation, as a whole, seems to be moving towards secularism and liberalism.

The poll revealed that 40% of Millennials fall into the “don’t” category of faith, which sets a new record high for this percentage. This means, according to the poll, that 40% of millennials either don’t believe God exists, don’t know if God exists, or don’t care if God exists. Additionally, only one third of millennials indicated that they believe in God, although the majority of those polled stated that they at least have a positive opinion about Jesus Christ.

Politically, millennials are moving further away from traditional, generally conservative ideals. Roughly half of those polled said they believe socialism is more beneficial than capitalism. Those on the liberal/progressive political side represent 40% of those polled, compared to only 29% who identify as conservative.

Additionally, the findings revealed that 39% of the 18-24 year-olds polled, part of the younger “generation Z” that shares similarities with millennials, identify as LGBTQ.

This is poll is telling about the challenges that young Christians will likely face in a growing secular world in the years to come. It is also a reminder for Christians to continually be in prayer for the next generation of believers, the direction of the church, and the direction of our nation.

Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.  – Daniel 9:18-19
