President Joe Biden’s approval rating just hit an all-time low. According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, a mere 31% of Americans approve of the way the president is handling his job. Biden’s numbers are trending more negatively than any other modern president in a mid-term cycle according to the statistical analysis firm 538.  While all presidents experience highs and lows in approval ratings, Biden’s numbers have been on a downward trajectory since almost immediately after becoming Commander in Chief eighteen months ago.

The Russia/Ukraine conflict, foreign policy, the border crisis and gun violence, are among the factors suggested to be impacting the president’s poor favor. However the most significant and persistent thorn in the president’s side continues to be the wobbly economy. Inflation in June rose 9.1% compared to June 2021, reflecting the quickest rise in more than 40 years. Soaring prices in nearly every sector is a stain felt by all voters and Democrats may pay dearly for it in the fall elections.

In addition to his plunging approval rating, the president is faced with the sobering fact that a staggering 71% of poll respondents said that they do not wish to see Biden run again in 2024. What the pollsters found to be particularly damning for the president is the fact that 54% of his own party said that he should not seek reelection. While some Trump supporters may see these numbers as promising, if Trump indeed decides to run again, the same poll found that 64% of Americans do not want the former president to run in 2024. Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy said, “There’s scant enthusiasm for a replay of either a Trump or Biden presidency. But while Trump still holds sway on his base, President Biden is underwater when it comes to support from his own party.”

The same Quinnipiac poll also asked registered voters which party they preferred if the midterm elections were held today.  Despite Biden’s potential drag on the party, a fairly healthy 45% of respondents said they wanted to see the Democratic Party win control of the United States House of Representatives, 44% preferred the Republican Party and 11% did not offer an opinion.  The results were nearly identical when asked which party they would like to see take control of the United States Senate.  Only time will tell if Biden will be an impediment to his party going forward or if he can revive his political career.  But a Biden comeback would not be unheard of.  Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama all rebounded from low approval ratings to win reelection.
