Putin signs at least a dozen deals with Vietnam

Russia and Vietnam are starting to cozy up to each other. Hanoi welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin with a prestigious ceremony just before the two nations signed at least a dozen agreements.

Putin also announced that he wants to build a “reliable security architecture” in the Hanoi region. The US responded by sending East Asia diplomat Daniel Kritenbrink to the capital to reaffirm Washington’s commitment to Vietnam and a peaceful Indo-Pacific region.

White House national security advisor John Kirby said the US will continue to deepen its ties with Hanoi and improve the mutually beneficial partnership.

However, Putin’s presence in Vietnam may rock US trust. This comes ahead of an important decision that could elevate Vietnam to market-economy status.
