Another chapter in one of the most storied rivalries in sports was written on Tuesday night in Boston. The Boston Red Sox defeated their arch rival New York Yankees 6-2 before a delighted crowd at Fenway Park in the first game of the MLB playoffs.

Boston jumped out to an early lead when Xander Bogaerts sent a two run shot over the center field fence in the 1st inning. Kyle Schwarber added to the lead in the 3rd when he hit a solo homerun, giving the Red Sox all the runs they would need for the W and sending Yankee ace Gerrit Cole to an early exit. The Red Sox would cruise to victory from there, adding one more run in the 6th and two more in the 7th.

This is special win for Boston, as they continue to even the score against their arch rivals in the 21st century.

For almost 90 years, the Red Sox were victims of numerous heartbreaking losses to the Yankees, beginning with a shocking trade of the legendary Babe Ruth in 1919. The Sox did not win a single title in the 86 years after the Ruth trade, while the Yankees won an unprecedented 26. In 2004, the Red Sox finally broke the alleged “Curse of the Bambino,” sweeping the Cardinals in the World Series and also beating the Yankees in the ALCS after falling behind three games to none. Since that World Series win, the Red Sox have won three more, while the Yankees have only won one.

Boston will now face the Tampa Bay Rays, who won an AL best 100 wins in the regular season, in the best-of-5 ALDS.

Tonight, the Dodgers and the Cardinals will face each other in the NL’s winner-take-all Wild Card Playoff game for the final spot in the Divisional Series.
