Eleven U.S. cities landed in the top 50 of Numbeo’s 2023 Crime Index, which ranks the most dangerous cities in the world. All eleven are managed by Democratic mayors.

Researchers with Numbeo compare the crime data for cities and rank them on a scale of 0 to 100.

Baltimore, known as “Charm City”, has a crime rate of 75.5 points and is now the 15th most dangerous city on the planet. Not far behind and ranked 18th is Memphis with 74.8 points. Detroit (19th), Albuquerque (23rd), and St. Louis (27th) round out the five U.S. cities that are above 70 points.

The six other U.S. cities in the top 50 are New Orleans (35th), Oakland (38th), Milwaukee (40th), Chicago (43rd), Philadelphia (46th), Cleveland (48th), and Houston (50th).

Several of those cities should come as no surprise to FISM News readers. FISM News recently reported that five police officers in Memphis were charged with murder after initiating a traffic stop that investigators say resulted in the beating and death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man. In August, FISM news reported on a deadly shooting that spanned multiple blocks in Detroit, with police calling it a random act of violence. New Orleans made headlines in September as the nation’s new murder capital, as local officials attempted to bring on civilian “officers” to help the police force.

Data from the FBI, including the Crime Data Explorer, backs the list compiled by Numbeo. When it comes to the most dangerous cities in the United States, Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans, and Baltimore consistently appear on multiple lists.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott recently tweeted: “Interested in playing your part to build a safer Baltimore? Join our Administrative Charging Committee to help ensure constitutional policing takes place in your neighborhood and across our great city.”

In theory, the Administrative Charging Committee would improve the disciplinary process of law enforcement officers, but it has drawn harsh criticism from many who think it will push officers away. One Twitter user responded to Mayor Scott’s tweet with: “This is that Obama thing? That makes police not do their job? So.. no!”

St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans, and Memphis make up twenty of the cities in the United States with the highest murder rates — murders per 100,000 people — according to worldpopulationreview.com St. Louis is number one on the list with researchers pointing to 2017, when 205 people were murdered there.

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones noted a problem with youth gun violence in a recent tweet.
