Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor turned vice presidential hopeful, is potentially in hot water again.
NBC News reports that the Minnesota nonprofit Feeding our Future faces criminal charges over an alleged pandemic aid scheme. In 2022, prosecutors accused the group of swindling $250 million from the federal child nutrition program, under the guise of providing meals for children in need.
The Republican House Education and Workforce Committee has now subpoenaed Walz and representatives from his state’s education and agriculture departments to hear their response to what is now called the largest pandemic fraud in the nation.
The subpoenas demand that the Minnesota government hand over documents with oversight information on the nonprofit. North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx (R) said the committed needs these documents to analyze Minnesota’s responsibilities and actions addressing the fraud.
A Walz spokesperson defended the Minnesota Department of Education, which was mainly to blame in the case. Walz responded that the department should’ve done its due diligence, though he said no state employee did anything “illegal.”
