Republican Senators urge Biden not to sign WHO pandemic treaty

Republican Senate leaders are pressing President Joe Biden not to sign an agreement expanding the WHO’s powers in the case of another global pandemic.

All 48 Republicans signed a letter to the president saying, “We strongly urge you not to join any pandemic related treaty, convention, or agreement being considered.”

The senators added, “Instead of addressing the WHO’s well-documented shortcomings, the treaty focuses on mandated resource and technology transfers, shredding intellectual property rights, infringing [on] free speech, and supercharging the WHO.”

The Biden administration has signaled support for an agreement that would centralize response to future pandemics.

Fox News reports that the World Health Assembly will take place between the end of May and the first day of June. Decisions regarding new policies of the WHO will be considered then.
