Two summers ago, the American media was transfixed on the mental capacity of then-President Donald Trump, who took a cognitive test to prove his capacity to lead and bragged for days about “acing” it. Last week, the concept of presidential powers of cognition was again at the fore.

Fifty House Republicans, under the leadership of Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas, a former White House physician under George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald J. Trump, renewed their calls for President Joe Biden to be tested and share the results with the American people.

It’s likely this request, like the two previous, will be ignored by the White House, but Jackson and company have nonetheless pressed on, sending an open letter to President Joe Biden, Physician to the President Kevin O’Connor, D.O., and Chief Medical Advisor Anthony Fauci, M.D.

“I have long said there would come a time when I was not the only one discussing Joe Biden’s cognitive decline,” Jackson said in a statement on his office’s website and in an interview with Fox News. “That time is now. As Democrats in the West Wing and the broader Democrat Party express discontent about his age-related decline, it should be clear now more than ever to President Biden, Dr. O’Connor, and Dr. Fauci that it is time to submit to a cognitive test. This is not a political issue, it’s common sense. If Joe Biden is confident in his ability to excel at a cognitive test the way President Trump did, he can easily put his fellow Democrats’ fears to rest with this one simple test.”

Democrats had no reservations about demanding Trump take a cognitive test in 2020. Trump passed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, he said with flying colors, and irked the mainstream media by continuing to brag of his mental acumen.

At the time, in an interview with Fox, Trump said he’d sought a cognitive test that he could take and “shut these people up;” these people being a reference to his critics, who often made a sport of calling Trump mentally unstable.

Now, Republicans are demanding Biden, who routinely struggles in the area of public speaking, prove he is mentally fit to serve as well.

“The American people should have absolute confidence in their President, knowing that he or she can perform their duties as Head of State and Commander in Chief,” the letter reads. “They deserve full transparency on the mental capabilities of their highest elected leader. To obtain the level of transparency that the American people deserve, we once again urge you to submit to a cognitive test immediately.”

The letter continues, “This is not an unprecedented request. Starting in 2018, political opponents and members of the media clamored for your predecessor, then-President Trump, to take a cognitive test. In response, the White House Physician conducted a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) for President Trump, at which he excelled.”

The Republican letter contains quite the lengthy recounting of various Biden speaking and memory gaffes, some of which the signatories suggest could be a sign of mental decline.
