RNC battles over party platform on abortion

Only weeks out from the Republican National Conventions, tensions are heating up over the party’s platform on abortion. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, former President Donald Trump has been adamant about leaving the issue up to the states, a point he made during his recent debate with Joe Biden.

The Republican Party has long supported a national abortion ban. In 2016, the platform called for a constitutional amendment to protect the unborn. But that could all change in the coming days as Republicans meet to draft this year’s platform.

Florida Senator and potential Trump VP pick Marco Rubio used quite a shock among some pro-lifers by backing the removal of a national ban from the platform.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, who is a member of the RNC platform committee, said he was stunned by what he called “Rubio’s capitulation to the forces of abortion.” Perkins says the RNC needs to keep a strong pro-life stance.
