RNC to decide party platform behind closed doors

In a break from tradition, the Republican National Committee will not allow reporters into the proceedings through which the RNC will finalize its party platform.

While the work of the group’s Platform Committee is usually covered by CSPAN, this will not be the case at this year’s national convention in Milwaukee. The committee is scheduled to meet next week to work on the final proposal for the Republican Party’s 2024 platform. This year, the three-day event will be closed to the public.

While an RNC spokesman told reporters that verified guests will be allowed, recently disclosed emails show that many activists are being denied access. Next week’s committee meeting will mark the first time since 2016 that the Republican Party has updated its platform.

At the same time, many are closely watching what is decided on abortion since the party hasn’t officially announced its stance on the issue.

While many in the party have pushed for a national abortion ban, others have called on Republicans to endorse leaving the issue at a state level.
