Hundreds of Ukrainian and Russian soldiers are returning home after the war’s biggest prisoner exchange.

The United Arab Emirates mediated the exchange, which it attributed to its “strong friendly relations” with both Moscow and Kyiv. Russia received 248 military personnel while Ukraine celebrated the return of 224 soldiers and six civilians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was “truly a great day for Ukraine.” He also vowed to press forward with more swaps in the future by expanding what he called an “exchange fund” of captured Russian soldiers.

The fighting continues. Ukraine attacked the Russian city of Belgorod Wednesday morning in the latest of retaliatory strikes on both sides. It marks a recent development in the war as both sides intensify their aerial warfare.
